By Emily O’Connell WEEDONS residents are angry Selwyn district councillor Mark Alexander says dust won’t be an issue with the quarry planned for the area. Cr Alexander sent an email to Weedons Residents Association secretary Gary Doyle saying while traffic Mark could an issue, dust Alexander wouldn’t be. Cr Alexander’s comments were reported in Western News last week, which prompted a quick response. Weedons residents Simon Moore and Stephen Bain said they were “horrified” by the councillor’s comments. “Mr Alexander has actually thwarted and obstructed the democratic process and must resign,” Mr Bain said. SURFING IS a bit like tennis and golf. There are thousands upon thousands of people who take part in those activities but only a tiny fraction of that number make it to the top. One of those who has that potential features in today’s paper. Conor McLennan has a chance to live the surfing dream – that is making a career out of it. The former Christchurch Boys’ High student, who is now based at an academy at Kiwi surfing mecca, Raglan, has just won the national under-18 title. That will hopefully springboard him into the national team where events further afield from our shores will beckon. A bright future ahead I suspect. – Barry Clarke

Alumni plan for Burnside HS By Julia Evans FORMER PRIME Minister John Key, rugby player Andy Ellis and author Eleanor Catton could soon be part of an alumni association at their old school. Burnside High School is investigating the possibility of establishing an association for previous students for the first time in its 58-year history. Principal Phil Holstein said the plan is in “its infancy.” “It’s in the planning phase. Phil Holstein But at this stage we’re seriously considering ways to keep our former students connected to the school. As well as reconnect them with current students,” he said. But he said there are a few hurdles the school and its board of trustees had to overcome before the plan could progress any further. “It’s something that’s really in the mind of the board. But to start it after 58 years, it’s going to be a challenge,” he said. Challenges come in terms of

58 years – 26,000. “It’s a lot,” he said. The school and board would then have to look into a programme that would manage the data on former students and appoint a person to be responsible for the association. “We also have to work out the kinds of things it would do,” he said. It is too early to have a time frame in mind, Mr Holstein said. “It will take a while to get all that done,” he said. The school and board is looking to develop a wider strategic plan first. “Once we got that, it’s a very exciting prospect.” Mr Holstein said the idea has been floating around for a while and it is now seizing the opportunity to begin establishing it. “Alumni or old boy and old girl associations are usually associated with longer established and single-sex schools,” he said. Burnside is the largest school in the country, outside Auckland, with a role of more than 2500. “It’s really about keeping that connection to the school even after you leave. I think that’s really important,” he said.

Quarry comments slammed by residents Park, cemetery trees face axe SEVERAL LARGE trees in Avonhead Park and Cemetery are going to be removed. Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board member Aaron Campbell said the trees are either dead, dying or dangerous. “The mainly eucalypt and poplar trees are to be removed due to continued decline and high risk to the public from branch and tree failure,” he said. The trees are located throughout both reserves, along the west, north boundaries and central area of the park and in the central area of the cemetery. Replanting is expected to take place from May to August. “We apologise for any inconvenience, including noise, but we will try and keep this to a minimum,” Mr Campbell said. The work, which is expected to start this week, is anticipated to take one week to complete.

resource consent process. This has angered Mr Moore. “I will not be spending $150,000 to do your job that you have been elected and paid to do. Can I suggest that you get off your chuff and represent me as I expect as a ratepayer.” Cr Alexander said he “gave his honest and independent opinion,
based on his experience” with the Rolleston quarry. The Rolleston quarry opened in 2013 on a section of land between Wards, Sandy Knolls and Kerrs Rds. Cr Alexander said he would not resign. Mr Doyle said it was Cr Alexander’s “choice to make.”
“I would say there’s as much chance of (Cr Alexander) resigning as a snowball lasting in hell,” he said. Cr Alexander said: “I’m the only district councillor who has offered any public advise to these residents. So in my view, I am doing my job,” he said. Christchurch city councillor Jimmy Chen is concerned about the quarry, its health effects and whether it will devalue nearby properties. He has sent emails to Mayor Sam Broughton and Environment Canterbury chairman Steve Lowndes. Cr Chen also plans to talk to Wigram MP Megan Woods, MP Amy Adams, Mayor Lianne Dalziel and other city councillors. “Generally speaking, I’ll do my best on behalf of the Templeton residents to express their concerns regarding this issue,” Cr Chen said. District council planning manager Jesse Burgess said the council has not received a resource consent application from Fulton Hogan yet. In a letter sent to residents near the proposed quarry, Fulton Hogan said it would be there for 25-40 years.

Denton group thankful for support By Emily O’Connell A COUNTRY rugby club is getting behind its Hornby ‘friends’ in a bid to stop the city council’s plan to build a $35.7 million mega centre in Denton Park. Darfield rugby club president Scott McIlroy said it will do whatever is needed to help the Hornby Rugby Football Club. “If they’re trying to close Denton Park, we’ll definitely be in behind them to try and keep it going,” he said. The proposed facility has been highly controversial with sports clubs fearful of losing their home grounds. Mr McIlroy said he’s not sure what they can do to assist yet. “No, I don’t know what options are available but I’m sure we’ll look at anything that helps them tick along,” he said. Hornby club chairwoman Lyn Hucklebridge is grateful for the support and she hopes more clubs follow suit. Mrs Hucklebridge said the Save Denton Park group will discuss what Darfield could do and get back to them. “What we need is for everyone to be outspoken about the whole process,” she said. The Hornby club’s lease runs

By Emily O’Connell HALSWELL residents are concerned with the amount of graffiti which has appeared in their suburb. City council graffiti clean-up volunteer and Halswell Residents’ Association treasurer Matt Shallcrass said State Highway 75 in Halswell is a popular spot for vandalism. “I think it’s just people passing through the area,” he said. Mr Shallcrass has reported eight graffiti incidents in Halswell already this month. Which is a large increase compared to his one report in December and two in November. He uses the city council’s Snap, Send, Solve application to record the vandalism. The application works by identifying the location the photo is taken using the phone’s Global Positioning System data. It sends an email to the city council from your email address, including the incident type, notes, address of incident, photo and contact details. The report is then allocated to the city council. Mr Shallcrass doesn’t believe school holidays have anything to do with the rise in graffiti.

Lincoln Rd’s four-lane plan
Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke writes about roading changes in the area and how they will affect the community THE FOUR-LANING of Lincoln Rd, between Curletts and Wrights Rds, looks to be going ahead after years of languishing unbudgeted in the city council’s Long Term Plan. The four-laning is for bus priority, not cars. Once completed, this will allow the New Zealand Transport Agency to four-lane its section of Lincoln and Halswell Rds, again for bus priority. At one level, this is a great idea. Giving buses the chance to make their way without being caught up in car traffic will shorten travel time and make their travel time more consistent. These improvements will encourage people to use the bus at peak times. The problem is what happens when these buses (and all the cars from the ever-growing numbers of houses) arrive at the gates of Addington Village – the
intersection with Whiteleigh Ave? Although the need for the improvement of this intersection is well understood, we need plans and action. The stated reason for the fourlaning is to enable increased bus frequency and increased bus reliability. However, buses already run every 15min, and we query how much this frequency can be

increased. Our counts show that buses are already nearly full at peak times, so it’s unlikely that the improved reliability can do much to boost patronage in the face of ongoing population growth. And again, what happens when these buses arrive at Addington? There is clearly the potential for Addington Village to drown in a sea of cars (and buses). Halswell Residents’ Association would like to see some outside-the-square thinking about both transport and work in the south-west of Christchurch (including Prebbleton, Lincoln, Rolleston), rather than the piecemeal approach that city council seems to be following. This was an idea we got from Wigram MP Megan Woods. It fits well with the intent of the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy, and seems pretty good to us. Some random ideas come t mind too: Mixed-mode travel, car-sharing, e-bike subsidies, work-from-home schemes and children going to their local schools.

Conor lives the surfing dream By Sophie Cornish CONOR MCLENNAN is living every young surfers dream – hitting the school books in the morning and riding waves in the afternoon. The former Christchurch Boys’ High School student recently won the under-18 title at the national surfing championships in Gisborne. Originating from Waimairi Beach, Conor, 17, represented his home club, North Wai Boardriders, in the competition. He moved to Raglan in 2016 to start at the Raglan Surf Academy. The programme is part of Raglan Area School and was set up in 1998. It allows students to complete NCEA while learning about surfing both in and out of the classroom. “We write reports about surfing, the safety of surfing and trying to get out to surf breaks, then every lunchtime we will finish up and go surfing. It’s a great life, I love it,” said Conor. The national final came down to a tight finish, which Conor said made time go by “very, very slowly.” “It was the best feeling ever, I don’t think words can describe how stoked I was to win that, I’ve

BLUEBERRY AND NECTARINE ROSE WINE DESERT Ingredients 1½ cups rosé wine ½ cup caster sugar 1 Tbsp gelatine 1 cup blueberries 2 nectarines Serving of vanilla ice cream Directions Combine the wine and sugar in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat for 5-6min or until the sugar is completely dissolved and the wine comes to a simmer.

8 lamb loin chops 1 handful fresh parsley
Ingredients

Combine rind of one lemon, two tbsp lemon juice, crushed garlic, mint (dried), salt, pepper and oil in a small bowl. Place lamb chops (mid-loin) in a shallow dish and pour
Reduce heat to low. Transfer 1/4 cup of the hot wine mixture to a small bowl and sprinkle over the gelatine, stirring to dissolve. Pour the gelatine mixture into the rest of the hot wine and stir well. Remove from heat and set aside for 10min to cool but not set. Divide half the blueberries among four serving glasses. Peel and slice one of the nectarines and divide between the glasses. Carefully pour half the wine over the fruit and refrigerate for 30min. Top with remaining blueberries, nectarine and wine, then cover glasses with plastic cling film and refrigerate until set. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Lincoln Decision Day helps students choose future 2018 has come around quickly. Maybe school is fast becoming a memory, or perhaps you are looking for a new direction. If you are new to tertiary study, 2018 might even be fees free, giving you the perfect start to your academic study. On 25 January Lincoln University is holding its Decision Day event on campus, from 9am to 4pm. Experts will be available to answer your questions about what to study, help you enrol and discuss your options so that the decision about where to study becomes easier. Lincoln is gearing up for a big year, adding new majors to its popular Commerce degrees as well as new programmes, to make sure it is offering choice to students. Students are now able to include a transferable environmental management major into a commerce degree, ensuring they are ready to meet the environmental challenges they will face in the future. Or they can include Event Management, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Tourism Management and Water Management, bringing new skills, perspectives and depth to their studies. There are also new separate majors in Supply Chain Management and Global Business in the Bachelor of Commerce as well as new programmes such as the Master of Professional Accounting (CPA) and the Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture and Professional Accounting), both of which prepare students to qualify as a professional accountants.
There is also the Master of Business in Finance, providing a perspective on finance in New Zealand and international contexts, with reference to sustainability, agribusiness, entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialisation Lincoln still has places in its on-campus student accommodation available, offering an opportunity to enjoy the whole range of student life. MICHAEL Jackson fans will be moonwalking their way to theatres next month as the Michael Jackson HIStory Show makes it's return to New Zealand. Aer an approximate 5000+ performances in the past nine years across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Indonesia, South Africa, Canada and the US, word of this show has spread amongst the MJ community, with the show being inundated with pleas to come back to the NZ stage. It was this persistent devotion of admirers that allowed producer John Van Grinsven to hear the requests loud and clear, ultimately leading to the Michael Jackson HIStory Show's return. e world-class production showcases all of Michael Jackson's greatest hits live on stage, complemented by the famous dance moves that fans all know, love and aspire to do. Star of the show, Dantanio, will be accompanied by a lively six-piece band, four groovy backup dancers and a phenomenal lighting team. e show features 40 different customised costumes, twenty of which are for the MJ character alone. Over 100 hours have been dedicated to the lighting design, which makes use of 160+ moving lights and over 2000 lighting cues arranged to punctuate and enhance the musical elements of the show. Playing the role of Michael is Dantanio, a South African theatre performer and solo recording artist who has been studying and impersonating Jackson since the age of nine! e Michael Jackson HIStory Show takes place at the Isaac eatre Royal on Monday 19th February 2018.
